Dessert Before Dinner Gives Homebuying Self-Doubt a Voice in New Navy Federal Campaign
Pittsburgh-based production company Dessert Before Dinner is putting the inner voice of home buying anxiety front and center in 'That Voice,' a new social campaign for Navy Federal Credit Union's Homebuyers Choice mortgage program. Directed by Andy Kelemen, the campaign takes a playful approach to a serious subject, bringing the doubts and frustrations of prospective homebuyers to life through an unconventional back-and-forth between its characters and an increasingly discouraging narrator.

The concept grew out of Kelemen's own experience navigating the mortgage process years earlier. Rather than focus on the usual aspirational imagery of homeownership, the campaign starts with the reasons people convince themselves it isn't possible. As the narrator rattles off familiar concerns about affordability, timing, and saving enough money, the people on screen begin to challenge those assumptions, breaking the fourth wall and talking directly back to the voice telling them they can't.

"I remember trying to get my first mortgage and having this constant internal conversation about all the reasons it wasn't going to happen," said Kelemen. "I thought it would be interesting to make that voice an actual character, then let the people on screen push back against it. There's something a little absurd about arguing with your own internal monologue, but I think it's something just about everyone can relate to."

Developed by Kelemen in collaboration with Navy Federal's internal creative and marketing teams, with agency Tongal also involved, the campaign was filmed over two days in Pittsburgh using a combination of professional actors, real couples, and families. Drawing on Dessert Before Dinner's background in doc style production, the team encouraged participants to interpret dialogue and talking points in their own words, allowing natural speech patterns, personal experiences, and unscripted moments to influence the performances.
While Dessert Before Dinner is often associated with comedy-driven commercial work, Kelemen and his team previously spent years producing documentary content for PBS, earning seven Emmy Awards. That nonfiction experience informed the campaign's casting and directing approach, prioritizing recognizable people and environments over polished commercial performances.

That philosophy extended into post-production. At the end of the shoot, Navy Federal's team suggested replacing the planned traditional voiceover with recordings from the on-camera cast themselves. Additional recording sessions were arranged, giving the campaign's internal monologue the same naturalistic quality as the performances on screen.

Produced on an accelerated timeline, 'That Voice' includes a 60-second hero film, a 30-second spot, and multiple 15 and 6 second executions running across Navy Federal's social channels.
