Son Lux has released their ninth studio album Out Into via This Is Meru, accompanied by a new music video for the album’s track “Out Into Us." Commissioned by MASS MoCA and Pioneer Works, produced by Caviar, and directed by Alex Cook, the film reflects the song's ideas of slowing down and lingering in transitional spaces, where fear, self-doubt, and emotional facades begin to give way to new unknown possibilities.
For nearly two decades, Son Lux has earned a reputation for splendor, but Out Into is something different: a punchy suite of tactile, detail-minded songs born from dazzling moments of collective improvisation. Rhythmically sumptuous and lyrically urgent, the album has been in the works for two years.
The new video for "Out Into Us" expands on the album’s themes of transformation, connection, and change. As a family waits for an approaching storm, what initially appears to be an external threat gradually reveals itself as something constructed and sustained by anxiety and doubt. By stepping into the storm rather than retreating, the illusion collapses, allowing something uncontrollable but alive to pass through.
The music video forms part of Out Into Us (Slow Down), a 17-minute video installation currently on view at MASS MoCA in North Adams, Massachusetts. The installation grew from guitarist Rafiq Bhatia's reworking of the song, taking it apart at the level of tempo itself and using playback as an instrument.
The project deliberately pushes against how music is increasingly experienced in the era of social media, where songs are often reduced to bite-sized fragments embedded without context in an endless scroll. Instead, Son Lux stretches the song into an expressionistic landscape, expanding the relationship between music and listener.
Son Lux has most recently composed the Oscar-nominated soundtrack for Everything Everywhere All at Once in 2022, Marvel's Thunderbolts in 2025, and is currently working on Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, the forthcoming feature directed by Bassam Tariq.
Son Lux and Alex Cook earned Best Alternative International at the UK Music Video Awards in 2023 for their previous collaboration on “Undertow,” which also won Best Music Video at Camerimage.
