“Outstanding” Nominated for Best LGBTQ Documentary at 2025 Dorian TV Awards

Nominated for Best LGBTQ TV Documentary or Documentary Series at this year’s Dorian TV Awards is Outstanding: A Comedy Revolution– a feature-length documentary that counts Katherine LeBlond & James Haygood of Union Editorial as Co-Executive Producers. Union’s Rodrigo Brazão edited the film, and Union also brought Post Supervisor Veronica ‘V$’ Garcia, Consulting Producer Kaitlin McLaughlin, and Assistant Editor Dion Riley to the project. Earlier this year, the film, which premiered globally on Netflix, was nominated for Outstanding Documentary at the 36th Annual GLAAD Media Awards.

“To be recognized by GALECA - an influential and respected group of tastemakers - means even more in these turbulent times,” said LeBlond.

In Outstanding: A Comedy Revolution, the legacy of LGBTQ comedians is examined, including out trans comedians such as Suzy Izzard and Roz Hernandez. The film premiered worldwide on Netflix on June 18, 2024. Written and directed by Page Hurwitz, this is the first feature length documentary to examine the history of queer stand-up comedy. The documentary considers the importance of LGBTQ+ stand-up as a catalyst for social change over the past five decades, actively reflecting and challenging cultural norms and values. Ultimately, the film reveals that queer comedians — whether they intended to or not — helped change the world, one joke at a time. Outstanding: A Comedy Revolutioncombines interviews, memorable stand up performances, archival materials, and verité footage featuring top LGBTQ+ comedians including Lily Tomlin, Robin Tyler, Sandra Bernhard, Wanda Sykes, Todd Glass, Suzy Izzard, Hannah Gadsby, Tig Notaro, Rosie O'Donnell, Margaret Cho, Bob The Drag Queen, and Trixie Mattel, among others.

Rounding out the Best LGBTQ TV Documentary or Documentary Series category alongside “Outstanding: A Comedy Revolution,” at the Dorian TV Awards are: “Disco: Soundtrack of a Revolution” (PBS); “Fanatical: The Catfishing of Tegan and Sara” (Hulu); “Outstanding: A Comedy Revolution” (Netflix); “Pee Wee as Himself” (HBO/Max); and “Queer Planet” (Peacock).

GALECA: The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics is composed of 560 members, making the organization the second largest group of entertainment journalists in the world. GALECA is a nonprofit that advocates for better pay, access and respect for entertainment journalists while also providing scholarships for LGBTQ journalism students.

Winners will be announced July 8.
