Filmmaker Ezra Hurwitz Directs Irreverent Film for the Miami City Ballet

Ezra Hurwitz has directed an artful dance film to celebrate the Miami City Ballet's upcoming 40th anniversary season. The Ballet’s first year with its new artistic director, Gonzalo Garcia, premieres on February 20th at the Adrienne Arsht Center.

Into the Magic City will include works by George Balanchine and the world-premiere of Alexei Ratmansky’s piece in honor of MCB’s visionary founder, Toby Lerner Ansin.

Shot in Miami, the film was produced in collaboration with the Versace mansion of South Beach. Built in 1930, the 19,000-square-foot mansion serves as the backdrop for the dancers’ decadent revelry.

Frolicking to the Johann Strauss II classic “Blue Danube Waltz,” the extravagant sets and costumes, paired with playful antics, create scenes worthy of Marie Antoinette and her court. Danny Santiago, the costume designer for the upcoming The Devil Wears Prada 2, styled the film for a dramatic, debaucherous effect.
