Union Editorial’s Marco Perez Cuts “Reggae Girlz,” Premiering at DOC NYC 2025

Reggae Girlz, a powerful documentary edited by Marco Perez, Partner/Editor at Union Editorial, will make its world premiere at the DOC NYC 2025 Film Festival as part of the Game Face Cinema – The Emotion of Sport section. The festival runs November 12–20 in Manhattan, with online screenings continuing through November 30. The first screening of Reggae Girlz takes place on November 14th at the Angelika Film Center’s Village East cinema.

Directed by two-time Oscar winner Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and Trish Dalton, produced by Philipp Manderla of Red Bull Studios, and executive produced by Cedella Marley, the film follows Jamaica's women's soccer team, the Reggae Girlz, on their battle for recognition, respect, and resources in the lead-up to the Women's World Cup.

“In this period of rapid change, DOC NYC is proud to present a collection of films that speak to urgent global, national, and personal matters,” said Jaie Laplante, Artistic Director of DOC NYC, in a statement. “What binds the filmmakers of this year’s official selection are their illuminations of shared humanity.”

Reggae Girlz unfolds during the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, chronicling the journey of Jamaica’s women’s football team as they took on global giants France and Brazil in landmark matches. Set to the timeless rhythm of Bob Marley’s reggae, the documentary captures the spirit, pride, and resilience that define Jamaica’s heart and soul, while shining a light on extraordinary athletes whose perseverance transcends borders. With players scattered across Jamaica, the UK, and Europe — including standout Khadija “Bunny” Shaw, top scorer in the UK Championship — the film celebrates both the struggle and triumph of women who play for love of country and sport.

Perez, who previously collaborated with the directors on the Hulu doc, DIANE VON FURSTENBERG: WOMAN IN CHARGE, described the collaboration as deeply rewarding: “It was an honor to reunite with Trish and Sharmeen,” said Perez. “The challenge was balancing the collective story of the team with the journeys of individual heroes scattered across the world. Working with such talented filmmakers—and with the passion and support of Red Bull Studios—made this one of the most inspiring projects I've been part of.”

“Marco is excellent to work with!” Dalton said. “His expertise in story, timing, and graphics enabled us to carve out even the most difficult scenes at warp speed.”

Perez recently edited projects for Meta (via creative studio Ventureland) and Google Veo, both directed by Oscar-winner Rayka Zehtabchi (Period) of Pretty Bird, and AFI (American Family Insurance, also created via Ventureland) with Pretty Bird director Goh Iromoto.
